I’m obsessed with how to make change more easily and here’s why…
After a successful career as an actor – movies, stage, Broadway, I had an artistic break. I couldn’t perform any more – and I didn’t know why. I’d lost my True North. I had no idea who I was and why I was here.
So, I did the only thing I knew how to do other than acting, weed people’s gardens for money. With each weed I’d pull, I thought, “What am I supposed to do next? Please show me what to do next!” I was sad and frustrated! I’d go home to my studio apartment, put on some music to distract me from myself and then I’d just doodle pictures. I wasn’t an artist, I just felt better when I did it. Now I know why. Drawing changes your chemistry. Drawing your future changes your life.
Today, when I sense a wobbling in my “on course” direction, I put on music – Beyonce belting Lift Every Voice or Mayer Waiting for the World to Change and I sit down and I draw a picture of my future self– it might be my tomorrow self or my next year self or my ten years from now self. The drawing lets the power of my imagination take hold and my creative genius drops in to guide me.
Neuroscientists have discovered that the process of drawing a future self picture fills your body with serotonin and oxytocin; the feel good elixirs of life. Then, when you use that boost to take action, you increase your chance of achieving that future you by 42%.
